Manipule de bouclier

Poitiers (86) - Musée Sainte-Croix

Musées de Poitiers, Christian Vignaud

The central part of the plate widens and curves on either side. Both ends are in the shape of a stylized leaf, and each retains a rivet with a flat circular head (D. 11 mm); straight, short shank or bent at right angles. Remains of wood adhere to the metal on the inside of the handle. The maniple that accompanied the umbo (inv. 2019.23.42) is a classical type with a hemi-cylindrical handle with double attachment; the shape of the ends of the handle may differ from one specimen to another. Its contours may be more or less rounded, or even cordiform.
