Médaille

The obverse and reverse, both limited by a border, feature two religious scenes. On the obverse is Christ on the Cross between the Virgin Mary, on the dexter side, and St. John, on the sinister side, both nimbed and standing. The slender cross, with two corners set into the ground by a horizontal line, occupies the entire height. Its broad titulus is horizontal. The crucified man, wearing a perizonium tied on his left hip, bends his legs to the dexter. On the reverse side, two lines of unequal thickness mark a horizontal plane below which are depicted a number of barely identifiable shapes. Above is a chalice with a false cup, surmounted by a crucifix host surrounded by a glory. Two angels adore the Blessed Sacrament. On the dexter, the angel kneels in profile, clasping his hands and raising his head. To the stern, the angel adopts a more animated posture, with hands spread and knees half-bent. This medal can be worn on a necklace with a clasp. In this case, its association with black pearls (glass?) and a skull-shaped bone bead suggests that it was attached to the end of a rosary.
